Elvissey

Elvissey was published in 1993 as the third entry in Jack Womack's ambitious 'Ambient' series, a collection of loosely connected science fiction novels exploring a decaying, alternate-history version of the 20th century. Set in a bleak future where the United States has collapsed into corporate fiefdoms, the narrative centers on a government-sponsored project to travel back in time to retrieve the 'true' Elvis Presley, serving as a biting satire of the American obsession with celebrity culture and historical revisionism.

Womack crafted the work during a period of transition for cyberpunk literature, moving away from purely technological tropes toward a more surreal, sociopolitical examination of late-capitalist malaise.
