E.T.A. Hoffmann's musical writings

E.T.A. Hoffmann, primarily known today for his gothic fiction, was also a prolific music critic and composer. This collection gathers his influential essays on music, originally published in the early 19th century in journals like the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung. These writings were pivotal in shaping the Romantic understanding of music, particularly his groundbreaking review of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which helped establish the composer as a titan of the era.

This specific edition, published by Cambridge University Press in 1989 and later reprinted, was edited and translated by Martyn Clarke and David Charlton. The volume provides modern scholars and enthusiasts with a critical apparatus that contextualizes Hoffmann's aesthetic philosophy. It serves as a vital resource for understanding the intellectual bridge between 18th-century rationalism and the emerging emotional intensity of the Romantic movement.
