Selected writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann

This volume, part of the University of Chicago Press’s tradition of scholarly translation, was curated to provide English-speaking readers with a definitive look at the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann. First published in 1969, the collection was intended to bridge the gap between the German Romantic movement and the twentieth-century interest in the uncanny, the surreal, and the psychological depths of literature. It serves as a comprehensive introduction to the author’s mastery of the fantastic, offering a selection of tales that highlight his influence on the development of the gothic and modern short story genres.

The editorial design of the book emphasizes academic rigor, focusing on clear, faithful translations that capture Hoffmann’s complex, often dream-like prose style. By prioritizing the structural integrity of the narratives, the publishers aimed to reestablish Hoffmann’s literary importance for a contemporary audience. Upon its release, it was well-received within academic circles for its accessible yet authoritative approach to these canonical texts, helping to solidify the author’s standing as a central figure in European Romanticism.
