Extract uit de dag-registers van het Noord-Amerikaansche Congres, betrekkelyk tot het neemen en verbeurd-verklaaren van scheeps-pryzen en het uitrusten van kaapers

This rare Dutch-language pamphlet was published in 1777 to inform European maritime and political circles of the legislative actions taken by the Continental Congress. As the American Revolutionary War intensified, the Congress needed to formalize the rules of naval engagement and privateering to secure international recognition and economic support, particularly from the Netherlands, which served as a crucial hub for clandestine trade and military supplies.

The text translates the Congressional resolutions regarding the seizure of enemy ships and the commissioning of privateers, a legal framework essential for legitimizing American naval efforts against the British Empire. Printed by John Dunlap, the official printer to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, the work reflects the urgent need for propaganda and diplomatic clarity during the infancy of the United States. Its circulation in the Dutch Republic helped solidify the perception of the American struggle as a formal, organized sovereign conflict rather than a mere colonial rebellion.
