Extensions--Jennifer Bartlett, Lynda Benglis, Robert Longo, Judy Pfaff

This exhibition catalog was published in 1980 by the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston to document the group exhibition titled Extensions. The show highlighted the work of four prominent contemporary artists—Jennifer Bartlett, Lynda Benglis, Robert Longo, and Judy Pfaff—who were pushing the boundaries of medium and installation art during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The publication serves as a vital record of a moment when the institutional art world began to formally recognize the transition toward more immersive, site-specific, and multidisciplinary practices.

The catalog design reflects the stark, minimalist aesthetic prevalent in institutional art publications of the early 1980s, prioritizing documentation of the individual artists' radical shifts in form. By juxtaposing Bartlett’s grid-based conceptualism with the sculptural fluidity of Benglis, the aggressive, cinematic intensity of Longo, and the chaotic, colorful spatial interventions of Pfaff, the book provides a curated look at the diverse trajectories of post-minimalism. It is regarded by collectors and scholars as an important primary document for studying the curatorial priorities and the artistic landscape of the Texas contemporary art scene during that era.
