Where it came from
Published by Aperture in 1962, this monograph serves as a definitive look at the enigmatic work of Frederick Sommer. The book emerged during a period when Sommer's complex, surrealist-influenced photography was gaining recognition within the American avant-garde, though he remained notoriously resistant to mainstream categorization. Aperture curated this volume to highlight his technical mastery across diverse mediums, including collages, drawings, and his distinct approach to landscapes and found objects.
The design of the monograph reflects the minimalist aesthetic favored by Aperture during the mid-twentieth century, emphasizing the clarity and texture of Sommer’s stark imagery. By presenting his work in a cohesive book format, the publisher aimed to bridge the gap between photography and fine art, positioning Sommer as a philosopher-artist. Upon its release, the volume was received as a challenging and profound study of vision, solidifying his reputation among serious scholars of photographic history.
