Where it came from
Published in 2005 by Yale University Press, this volume serves as a definitive retrospective of the work of Frederick Sommer, an artist whose multifaceted practice spanned surrealist photography, drawing, and musical notation. The book was developed in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, aiming to contextualize Sommer’s often enigmatic and intellectually rigorous imagery within the broader history of 20th-century American modernism.
The monograph was edited by Keith F. Davis and features contributions that explore Sommer’s preoccupation with the philosophical implications of sight and material. Designed to reflect the artist’s own meticulous approach to composition, the publication gathers his stark, unconventional portraits, landscapes, and assemblage photographs, providing readers with a curated view into his complex creative philosophy. It received critical acclaim for its comprehensive research and its role in re-establishing Sommer as a pivotal, if singular, figure in avant-garde photographic circles.
