Friedrich Ludwig Stamm's Ulfilas

Friedrich Ludwig Stamm’s Ulfilas was first compiled in the 19th century as a comprehensive philological tool designed to make the Gothic language accessible to scholars of Germanic linguistics. The project was rooted in the 1858 translation and commentary of the Gothic Bible, which was originally authored by the 4th-century bishop Ulfilas. Stamm sought to provide a definitive edition that bridged the gap between early medieval text and modern philological study, creating a foundational resource for understanding the evolution of the Germanic linguistic family.

The 1903 edition published by F. Schöningh represents the later iterations of this work, refined by subsequent editors such as Moritz Heyne and Ferdinand Wrede who maintained the integrity of Stamm's original vision. These editions were intended for academic libraries and serious students of historical grammar. The work is widely regarded for its methodical arrangement of the Gothic text alongside a glossary and grammatical notes, serving as a pillar in the study of archaic Germanic dialects and standing as a testament to the rigorous, systematic nature of German philological scholarship during the turn of the century.
