Friends

Friends was written and illustrated by Eric Carle, a seminal figure in children's literature known for his distinct collage technique. Published in 2013, the book follows a young boy’s journey through a landscape to find his friend who has moved away, emphasizing the enduring nature of connection across distance. It reflects Carle’s lifelong interest in nature and simple, heartfelt themes, utilizing his signature vibrant, hand-painted tissue paper collages to create a tactile and visually engaging experience for young readers.

The book is a part of Carle’s extensive bibliography produced through Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Random House, which has long been instrumental in maintaining the availability of his work. Like his earlier masterpiece, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the design of Friends focuses on clarity and rhythm, favoring a gentle narrative structure that complements the bold, textured imagery. Upon its release, it was received as a tender exploration of childhood friendship and remains a staple in classrooms and libraries for its accessibility and emotional warmth.
