From shield to storm

From Shield to Storm was published in 1991 by William Morrow & Company, arriving at a pivotal moment in global geopolitical analysis. Authored by James F. Dunnigan, a prominent military historian and wargame designer, the book served as an essential primer for understanding the military capabilities and logistical realities of the Gulf War. It provided a structured breakdown of the coalition forces and the Iraqi military, intended to demystify complex combat operations for a general audience suddenly thrust into the era of 24-hour televised conflict.

Dunnigan leveraged his expertise in systems analysis and military simulation to craft a work that emphasized the interplay of technology, training, and strategic doctrine. The design of the book focused on accessibility, utilizing clear data-driven insights to explain why specific military outcomes occurred. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by readers seeking a grounded, professional perspective during a time of intense media speculation, establishing itself as a hallmark of early 1990s military non-fiction.
