Fujita Tsuguharu ten

Fujita Tsuguharu ten was published by Nihon Keizai Shinbunsha in 2006 to accompany a major retrospective exhibition of the work of Tsugouharu Foujita. The volume serves as a comprehensive visual chronicle of the artist's life, bridging his early years in the Parisian avant-garde movement of the 1920s with his later return to Japan and his exploration of religious and spiritual themes. It was intended to offer a scholarly reassessment of his unique stylistic synthesis, which successfully combined traditional Japanese ink-wash techniques with the nuanced modeling and composition of the Western École de Paris.

The book’s design prioritizes the ethereal, milky white skin tones that became Foujita's signature trademark, ensuring that his delicate linework and soft, layered pigment applications were accurately represented. By compiling diverse works across his career, the publication highlights the evolution of his aesthetic from bohemian portraiture to the somber, monumental works produced during the mid-twentieth century. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by the art history community for its thorough cataloging of his complex artistic journey and its respectful handling of his complicated legacy in both Europe and Japan.
