Garfield Classics (Garfield Classic Collection)

The Garfield Classic Collection, published by Ravette, emerged during a period when Jim Davis’s cynical, lasagna-loving feline had cemented his status as a global pop-culture phenomenon. These volumes were curated to collect the early years of the strip, capturing the transition of Garfield from a simple house cat into the acerbic, observational humorist that defined newspaper comics throughout the 1980s and 90s.

Jim Davis originally conceived the character to tap into the universal relatability of laziness and appetite, focusing on a balance between physical comedy and sharp, deadpan wit. The design of these specific Ravette editions prioritized accessibility and chronological storytelling, allowing readers to trace the development of Garfield’s personality and his evolving dynamic with Jon Arbuckle. Upon release, the series was well-received by fans seeking a convenient, archival approach to the strip's foundational material.
