Gordon-Van Tine's ready-cut homes

The 1916 Gordon-Van Tine catalog belongs to the height of the mail-order home movement in early twentieth-century America. During this era, companies like Gordon-Van Tine sought to simplify the construction process by providing 'ready-cut' materials, where lumber and components were pre-measured and numbered at the factory, then shipped by rail directly to the building site. This method was designed to help prospective homeowners bypass expensive architectural fees and the uncertainties of local material procurement.

The 1916 volume highlights a shift in domestic design, showcasing the transition from complex Victorian layouts toward the more streamlined, efficient floor plans favored by middle-class families of the period. The illustrations and copy were carefully curated to project an image of modern convenience and sturdy, wholesome living. As a marketing tool, the catalog functioned both as an architectural guide and a sales prospectus, reflecting the company’s focus on the growing demand for affordable housing in an expanding suburban market.
