Helge-digtene i den Ældre Edda

Published in 1899, Sophus Bugge’s Helge-digtene i den Ældre Edda represents a pivotal moment in late 19th-century philological scholarship. As a distinguished Norwegian linguist and expert in Old Norse literature, Bugge sought to rigorously analyze the Helgi lays found within the Poetic Edda. His work was produced during a period of intense intellectual curiosity regarding the origins of Norse mythology and the linguistic structures of Old Icelandic, aiming to provide a scholarly foundation that would influence subsequent generations of Germanic studies.

The volume serves as a critical edition and commentary, reflecting the precise, detail-oriented approach characteristic of the period's academic tradition. Bugge’s design and editorial philosophy were rooted in the desire to demystify complex heroic poetry through meticulous textual comparison and historical context. Upon its release, the text was received as an essential reference for serious students of Norse tradition, establishing Bugge’s reputation as a foundational figure in the systematic interpretation of Eddic poetry.
