Where it came from
Published in 1896 by G. E. C. Gad in Copenhagen, 'Helge-digtene i den ældre Edda: deres hjem og forbindelser' represents a significant scholarly contribution by the Norwegian philologist Sophus Bugge. Written during a period of intense academic debate regarding the origins of Old Norse mythology, the work reflects Bugge's controversial hypothesis that many of the Eddic poems were heavily influenced by Christian and classical traditions rather than being purely native Scandinavian developments.
The book is a dense, analytical exploration of the Helgi lays within the Poetic Edda, aiming to trace their geographical and cultural roots. Bugge, who was a preeminent scholar of his time, utilized comparative linguistics and historical criticism to challenge the prevailing Romantic-nationalist view of the period. While his theories were met with significant skepticism by many of his contemporaries, the work remains an important touchstone in the historiography of Germanic philology and Norse literary studies.
