Henry van de Velde

This volume serves as a comprehensive scholarly survey of Henry van de Velde, the influential Belgian painter, architect, and interior designer who was a pivotal figure in the Art Nouveau movement and a precursor to modernism. Published in 2010, the work was compiled to document his transition from the refined aestheticism of the late nineteenth century to his later, more functionalist theories that would ultimately shape the founding of the Bauhaus in Weimar.

The book highlights Van de Velde's commitment to the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' or total work of art, a philosophy where he sought to harmonize every element of an interior environment. It analyzes his departure from Belgian decorative arts toward the rationalized design principles he championed during his tenure as the director of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts. By focusing on his critical writings and architectural legacy, the text provides a nuanced perspective on his reception as both a visionary designer and a controversial figure in the history of German industrial design.
