Where it came from
This monograph serves as an essential retrospective on the life and legacy of Henry van de Velde, the Belgian architect, designer, and key figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Published in 1958 by the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the volume was conceived shortly after the artist's death to document his monumental influence on European design, spanning from his early turn-of-the-century interiors to his transition into the modernist aesthetic.
The publication is celebrated for its curated insight into van de Velde’s philosophy of Gesamtkunstwerk, or the total work of art, which emphasized harmony between architecture and interior decoration. Compiled by experts at the Suomen Rakennustaiteen Museo, the text provides a scholarly look at his transition from Impressionist painting to the functionalist architectural principles that defined the Bauhaus precursor schools he helped establish.
