Het Mariaretabel van de O.-L.-V. Basiliek van Tongeren

This scholarly monograph was published in 1984 by the Basilica of Our Lady in Tongeren, Belgium. It serves as a comprehensive documentation of the late-medieval carved altarpiece housed within the basilica, which is widely considered one of the finest examples of Brabantine woodcarving. The volume was produced to provide both historical context and technical analysis for pilgrims and art historians visiting the site, reflecting a period of renewed interest in preserving and cataloging ecclesiastical heritage in the Limburg region.

The publication acts as a detailed guide to the iconography and craftsmanship of the retable, a sophisticated wood structure typically characterized by intricate polychrome detailing and narrative scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. By placing the work within its specific liturgical and artistic lineage, the authors sought to illuminate the transition between late Gothic and early Renaissance aesthetics that define the basilica's collection. It remains a foundational reference for those studying the localized production centers of late 15th-century religious art in the Low Countries.
