Where it came from
The Historia Alexandri Magni, often attributed to the enigmatic figure Pseudo-Callisthenes, serves as the foundational text for the Alexander Romance, a collection of legendary accounts surrounding the life and conquests of Alexander the Great. Originally composed in Greek during the late antiquity period, this narrative tradition evolved over centuries, blending historical fact with fantastical embellishments, such as encounters with mythical creatures and divine parentage.
This specific volume, published by the Institut für Byzantinistik und Neugriechische Philologie in 1926, represents a scholarly effort to categorize and preserve the textual traditions of this vast epic cycle. It stands as an academic contribution to the field of Byzantine studies, intended to provide researchers with a structured edition of the evolving manuscripts that shaped European and Middle Eastern literary perceptions of Alexander throughout the Middle Ages.
