Hommage à Stanislaw-Ignacy Witkiewicz

Published by Die Kunsthalle in 1980, this volume serves as a scholarly tribute to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, commonly known as Witkacy, the Polish avant-garde painter, playwright, and philosopher. The work was released to coincide with a period of renewed international interest in his surrealist art and theatrical output, providing a comprehensive look at his influence on modern European aesthetic movements.

The publication was designed to contextualize Witkacy’s 'Pure Form' theory, a cornerstone of his artistic philosophy that prioritized the autonomy of art from representational reality. The contributors sought to document the breadth of his creative life, balancing his tumultuous personal history in the interwar period with the rigorous intellectual framework he established, and the book is widely regarded by art historians as an essential reference for understanding his enduring impact on contemporary performance and visual art.
