Horace's Carmen Saeculare

Michael C. J. Putnam, a distinguished scholar of Latin literature and professor emeritus at Brown University, composed this monograph as a focused examination of Horace’s ceremonial hymn, the Carmen Saeculare. Commissioned to celebrate the secular games of 17 BCE, the poem serves as both a political tribute to Augustus and a complex reflection on Roman religious tradition. Putnam’s work seeks to bridge the gap between the poem's formal structural demands and its deeper, often contradictory, thematic undercurrents regarding the stability of the Roman state.

Yale University Press published this specific volume in 2010, contributing to their long-standing commitment to classical studies. The design of the scholarly edition adheres to the rigorous academic standards expected of the press, prioritizing readability and extensive annotation. Upon its release, the volume was received as a definitive resource for classicists, praised for Putnam's ability to navigate the nuances of Horatian meter and the challenging historical context of the Augustan age with scholarly precision.
