Where it came from
Jamieson Boyd Hurry published this comprehensive study of Imhotep in 1926, reflecting the intense early 20th-century fascination with Egyptology following major archaeological discoveries. As a physician and scholar, Hurry sought to document the historical evolution of Imhotep from a mortal royal architect and vizier under Pharaoh Djoser into a deified figure of medicine and healing in the Greco-Roman period.
The book remains a seminal work in the field of medical history, favored for its synthesis of archaeological evidence, papyrology, and classical literature. While the AMS Press edition is a later reprint, the original 1926 scholarship established a framework for understanding how ancient Egyptian architectural innovation intersected with early medical practices, earning a lasting reputation as a foundational, if specialized, academic reference.
