Improbable War?

Improbable War? was published in 2007 by Berghahn Books as part of its International Studies in Social History series. Edited by historian Holger Afflerbach, the volume emerged from academic discussions surrounding the origins of the First World War and the historiographical debates concerning the inevitability of the conflict. It brings together essays from various scholars to analyze whether the outbreak of war in 1914 was the result of long-term structural inevitability or specific diplomatic failures and contingencies.

The book serves as a scholarly contribution to revisionist and post-revisionist interpretations of early twentieth-century European diplomacy. Designed as a rigorous academic resource, the text aims to challenge deterministic narratives that viewed the Great War as an unavoidable consequence of geopolitical tension. Upon its release, it was received within academic circles as a nuanced attempt to bridge the gap between structuralist arguments and the role of individual political agency in the period leading up to the July Crisis.
