Where it came from
Published in 2005 by R. Oldenbourg, this scholarly work by historian Holger Afflerbach examines the role and influence of Kaiser Wilhelm II as the supreme warlord during the First World War. The book was developed as a critical source compilation, drawing on archival records and documents from the Kaiser's military entourage to provide a nuanced perspective on the monarchy's actual decision-making power amidst the catastrophic events of 1914–1918.
Afflerbach, a respected expert on Wilhelmine Germany, designed this collection to move past simplistic caricatures of the Kaiser. By meticulously assembling firsthand military accounts, he sought to address the historical debate surrounding the extent of Wilhelm’s control over the German military apparatus versus his reliance on the General Staff. The work is widely regarded in academic circles for its objective analysis and contribution to a more accurate historical understanding of the Imperial command structure.
