Where it came from
Originally serialized as a twelve-issue limited series beginning in 1998, this work was conceived to revitalize the Inhumans for a modern readership under the Marvel Knights imprint. Writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee aimed to shift the focus from traditional superhero action to a more somber, political study of the Royal Family’s isolation, emphasizing the cultural and psychological weight of their rigid caste system.
Jae Lee’s artistic contribution is frequently cited as the defining element of the series, utilizing a dark, atmospheric aesthetic that departed significantly from the standard Marvel house style of the era. The work was met with critical acclaim, eventually winning the 1999 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series, and it remains a touchstone for readers interested in a more introspective, character-driven approach to the Marvel Universe.
