Where it came from
Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang was originally published in 1975, emerging from Mordecai Richler's desire to entertain his own children with a story about a small boy who is perpetually overlooked. The character, named for his habit of repeating every phrase twice to be heard, reflects the frustration of being the youngest in a large family, set against the backdrop of an imaginative, slightly surreal adventure. This specific 1995 edition was released by Scholastic Canada, continuing the book's legacy as a staple of Canadian children's literature.
The book's enduring appeal is largely attributed to its balance of dark, dry humor and a genuine understanding of a child's perspective on adult bureaucracy and injustice. The original illustrations by Fritz Wegner helped define the whimsical yet slightly menacing tone of the narrative, which resonated with readers for its sophisticated wit. The story has been adapted into both film and television, cementing Jacob Two-Two's place as an iconic character in English-Canadian literature.
