Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang

Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang was written by the prominent Canadian author Mordecai Richler and first published in 1975. Richler, widely celebrated for his satirical adult fiction, created this children's book after being inspired by his own young son, Jacob, who often had to repeat everything he said to be heard by his older siblings. The narrative centers on a small, shy boy who is sentenced to two years in a dungeon for the crime of insulting a shopkeeper, reflecting Richler's signature wit and his keen ability to capture the anxieties of childhood.

The book’s distinct visual identity is largely defined by its original illustrations, notably those by Fritz Wegner in early editions. Wegner’s drawings complemented the whimsical yet slightly menacing tone of Richler’s prose, helping the story achieve status as a classic of Canadian children's literature. Upon release, the book was warmly received for its imaginative premise and its clever, subversive humor, eventually spawning two sequels and a television adaptation that cemented its place in the cultural canon.
