Jacques-André Portail

Published in 1996, this scholarly monograph by Xavier Salmon serves as a definitive study of Jacques-André Portail, an eighteenth-century French artist celebrated for his elegant drawings and works in red chalk. Commissioned to accompany exhibitions and research focused on the draughtsman's oeuvre, the volume provides a critical examination of Portail’s role within the artistic circles of the Ancien Régime, particularly his service to the French court and his contributions to the decorative arts.

The design of the book reflects the academic standards of mid-1990s art historical publishing, prioritizing high-quality reproductions of Portail’s delicate graphic work to illuminate his stylistic evolution. By contextualizing his career within the broader framework of French rococo and neoclassical transitions, the text was well-received by historians of the period for consolidating fragmented knowledge regarding an artist whose private, intimate style often escaped the monumental categorization reserved for painters of the time.
