Where it came from
Published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1989, this scholarly biography explores the life and work of Jacques-Louis David, the preeminent painter of the French Revolution. Warren Roberts seeks to contextualize David's transition from an academic artist to a central figure in the political upheaval of the late eighteenth century, examining how his aesthetic choices were deeply entwined with the radical shift in power and ideology during the revolutionary period.
Roberts utilizes a multidisciplinary approach, blending art history with socio-political analysis to interpret David’s major canvases and his roles within the Committee of Public Safety. The work is widely regarded as a significant contribution to the study of Neoclassicism, providing a nuanced perspective on how David’s commitment to republican ideals manifested in his compositions and served as a vehicle for his political alignment.
