Jacques-Louis David's Oath of the Horatii

This work serves as a comprehensive scholarly analysis of Jacques-Louis David's 1784 masterpiece, a seminal painting that defined the Neoclassical movement. Thomas Crow produced this study as part of his doctoral research, grounding the examination of the painting within the volatile sociopolitical climate of pre-Revolutionary France. By analyzing the 'Oath of the Horatii' as both an artistic milestone and a political statement, Crow explored how David utilized stark, heroic imagery to galvanize the public spirit and challenge the aesthetic norms of the French Academy.

The publication originated through University Microfilms, which specialized in preserving academic theses for specialized distribution among art historians and researchers. Crow’s approach was noted for its focus on the intersection of artistic intent and the shifting social structures of the late 18th century. In the decades since its release, this volume has been recognized as a foundational piece of scholarship that helped shift the focus of art history toward the cultural contexts that necessitate such dramatic, revolutionary artistic output.
