Where it came from
This songbook was published by Hal Leonard in 1996 to accompany the musical score for the Henry Selick film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. Randy Newman, a cousin of composer Alfred Newman, was brought on to provide the film’s musical landscape, a departure from his usual satirical songwriting, focusing instead on whimsical, character-driven tracks that mirrored the film's stop-motion aesthetic.
The book serves as a folio of Newman’s original compositions, capturing the arrangements intended for both piano and vocal performance. Designed with the standard professional layout typical of Hal Leonard’s mid-90s film tie-ins, it reflects a period where film scores were routinely transcribed for home enthusiasts. It was received by fans of both the film and Newman’s distinct Americana style as a rare look at his technical approach to children's film scoring.
