Where it came from
Published in 1992 by Tallgrass Press, this monograph serves as a comprehensive overview of Jenny Holzer’s early career and her pioneering work with the 'Truisms' series. The book captures the transition of her conceptual art from the anonymous posters and stickers she began plastering throughout Manhattan in the late 1970s to the large-scale electronic LED installations that defined her practice in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The publication was designed to provide a cohesive visual and textual archive of Holzer's provocative use of public space as a medium for social commentary. By compiling her stark, aphoristic texts—which challenge power structures and conventional wisdom—the book reflects the artist's commitment to infiltrating the daily lives of passersby. It is widely regarded as a foundational reference for understanding the intersection of language, public art, and institutional critique during the postmodern era.
