Jenny Holzer

Published in 1982 by the Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, this catalogue accompanied an early exhibition of Jenny Holzer’s work. During this period, Holzer was becoming recognized for her 'Truisms'—a series of aphorisms displayed in public spaces through posters, electronic signs, and stickers. The book serves as a vital document of her transition from street-based interventions to the institutionalized gallery space, capturing the stark, typographic nature of her conceptual approach to language and social commentary.

The design of the publication reflects Holzer’s commitment to accessibility and the subversion of traditional artistic mediums. By utilizing a format that echoes the ephemera of her public installations, the book maintains the aggressive, direct aesthetic of the original texts. It was produced as part of the broader effort to contextualize her interrogation of power structures, gender, and public perception, and it remains a foundational text for those studying the influence of language-based conceptual art in the 1980s.
