Johannis Hevelii Descriptio cometae

Published in 1666, Descriptio cometae was authored by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius as a detailed scientific account of the Great Comet of 1664 and the subsequent comet of 1665. The work was printed in Danzig at Hevelius’s own private press, which he established to ensure the highest quality of reproduction for his intricate astronomical observations and copperplate engravings. This production reflects the 17th-century intellectual environment where natural philosophers were attempting to reconcile observational astronomy with the physical nature of cometary movement, a subject that remained a point of significant debate during the period.

The volume is celebrated for its rigorous empirical approach and the exceptional artistry of its plates, which were designed by Hevelius himself to depict the precise paths and characteristics of the comets as viewed from his observatory. His commitment to observational detail and the careful calibration of his instruments influenced the work's reception within the Royal Society and the broader European scientific community. By documenting these celestial events with such precision, Hevelius cemented his reputation as one of the preeminent observational astronomers of his era, providing essential data that would later inform the work of his contemporaries.
