Johannis Hevelii machinae coelestis pars prior

Johannes Hevelius published the first part of his magnum opus, Machina Coelestis, in 1673 at his private press in Danzig. This ambitious work was intended to document his decades of meticulous astronomical observations, aiming to provide the most precise catalog of star positions and planetary movements of the seventeenth century. Hevelius funded the publication himself, emphasizing his commitment to scientific rigor and self-sufficiency in an era before institutionalized astronomical data sharing.

The volume is notable for its intricate copperplate engravings, many of which were illustrated by Hevelius’s wife, Elisabetha Koopman Hevelius. Her contributions were instrumental in documenting the observational setup and the astronomical instruments used at his observatory, known as the Stellaenburg. While the work was highly regarded for its precision, it also became the subject of a famous and contentious debate with Robert Hooke and Edmond Halley, who challenged Hevelius's reliance on naked-eye observations over the emerging telescopic micrometer technology.
