Josef Hoffmann

This volume serves as a foundational monograph dedicated to the life and work of Josef Hoffmann, a pivotal architect and designer of the early twentieth century. Published in conjunction with the Neue Galerie New York, the book contextualizes Hoffmann’s transition from the rigid aesthetics of the nineteenth century toward the cleaner, geometric modernism that defined the Vienna Secession and his later role as a founder of the Wiener Werkstätte.

The design of the book reflects the meticulous attention to detail associated with Hoffmann’s own aesthetic philosophy, known as Gesamtkunstwerk or the total work of art. By showcasing his iconic metalwork, furniture, and interior design projects, the publication aims to provide a comprehensive visual survey for scholars and enthusiasts of Austrian modernism. Upon its release, the work was received as an essential reference for understanding how Hoffmann’s focus on structural clarity and ornamentation helped bridge the gap between historicism and the contemporary functionalist movement.
