Where it came from
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum Moderner Kunst, this volume serves as a comprehensive study of the life and work of Josef Hoffmann, a foundational figure in early 20th-century design. Hoffmann was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, movements that sought to elevate the decorative arts to the level of fine art by prioritizing craftsmanship, geometric abstraction, and the integration of architecture with interior design.
The book highlights Hoffmann's transition from the floral ornamentation of Art Nouveau toward the austere, proto-modernist aesthetic for which he became internationally renowned. By documenting his architectural projects and product designs, the text provides context for his influence on the development of modernism, reflecting a period when European designers were increasingly focused on creating functional, unified environments that rejected the excesses of traditional historical styles.
