Where it came from
This retrospective volume serves as a comprehensive exploration of the life and work of Josip Vaništa, a pivotal figure in Croatian contemporary art and a co-founder of the influential Gorgona Group. Published in 2013 by Galerija Mona Lisa, the book contextualizes Vaništa’s minimalist approach and his enduring commitment to conceptual art, documenting his shift from traditional painting to the sparse, reductive aesthetics that defined the Zagreb art scene in the 1960s.
The publication was designed to synthesize Vaništa’s multidisciplinary contributions, including his extensive correspondence and his signature use of monochromatic palettes. It reflects the atmosphere of the post-war European avant-garde, where artists sought to strip away representational excess in favor of philosophical inquiry. The book is widely regarded by art historians as an essential reference for understanding the intellectual rigor behind Vaništa's practice and the broader legacy of the Gorgona collective.
