Józef Ignacy Kraszewski

Published in 1962 by Ludowa Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza, this biographical study of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski was authored by Wincenty Danek. It emerged during a period of renewed scholarly interest in Kraszewski, one of Poland’s most prolific 19th-century writers, whose work served as a cornerstone of the national literary canon. Danek was a dedicated researcher of the period, and this volume was intended to provide a comprehensive academic overview of the life and intellectual development of a man often considered the most versatile figure in Polish literature.

The book follows a classic mid-century Polish biographical format, utilizing archival research to contextualize Kraszewski’s massive output of novels, essays, and political writing. As a publication of the Ludowa Spółdzielnia Wydawnicza, a cooperative publisher, it was designed to reach a wide, educated readership interested in cultural history. The design reflects the austere, functional aesthetic of the era’s Polish publishing industry, favoring legibility and substantive content over elaborate ornamentation, and it remains a standard reference for scholars studying Kraszewski’s place within the 19th-century European literary landscape.
