Where it came from
Published in 1999 by Sine nomine, this volume serves as a scholarly exploration of Joaquín Torres-García, the influential Uruguayan constructivist artist known for his focus on universal symbolism and the structure of order. The text was curated by Miguel A. Battegazzore, an academic and artist himself, who sought to contextualize Torres-García's lifelong project of bridging European avant-garde movements with the indigenous aesthetic traditions of the Americas.
The book functions as an analytical survey of Torres-García's intellectual framework, specifically his 'Universal Constructivism' philosophy. Battegazzore provides a rigorous look at the geometric grid structures and iconic motifs that define the artist's legacy, aiming to illuminate how these elements were intended to convey a sense of harmony and cosmic balance. Within the art community, the work is regarded as a valuable resource for understanding the theoretical underpinnings of the Taller Torres-García period.
