Where it came from
Published in 2014 by the Universitat Politècnica de València, this volume serves as a comprehensive catalog and retrospective of the personal photographic archive of Jürgen Schadeberg. Schadeberg, a German-born photographer renowned for his documenting of life in South Africa during the apartheid era, is widely celebrated for his intimate portrayals of figures such as Nelson Mandela. This publication emerged as part of the university's commitment to cultural archival preservation and was designed to provide a scholarly context to the historical significance of his visual legacy.
The book functions as both a tribute to Schadeberg’s career and a technical analysis of his approach to photojournalism and portraiture. Its design prioritizes clarity and narrative flow, organizing his vast body of work to emphasize the human stories behind his iconic images. The collection was well received within academic and artistic circles for its archival depth, offering readers a window into the evolution of social documentary photography throughout the twentieth century.
