Jürgen Schadeberg

Published in 2008 by Hatje Cantz, this monograph serves as a comprehensive retrospective of the work of Jürgen Schadeberg, a photographer renowned for his profound visual documentation of South Africa during the apartheid era. Edited by Ralf-P. Seippel, the volume was produced to capture the breadth of Schadeberg’s career, moving from his early days at Drum magazine, where he chronicled the lives of Black South Africans and the burgeoning anti-apartheid movement, to his later ethnographic and landscape photography.

The book’s design adheres to the high aesthetic standards of Hatje Cantz, favoring a clean, monochromatic layout that allows Schadeberg’s candid and often stark imagery to remain the focal point. It was received by the photography community as a definitive archival resource, lauded for contextualizing Schadeberg’s role as both a witness to historical trauma and a master of humanistic portraiture, effectively securing his legacy for future generations of photojournalists.
