Kafka und das Judentum /herausgegeben von Karl Erich Grözinger /Stepephanie Moses / Hans Dieter Zimmermann

Kafka und das Judentum was published in 1987 by Jüdischer Verlag, a venerable imprint noted for its commitment to Jewish literature and cultural history. Edited by Karl Erich Grözinger, Stephanie Moses, and Hans Dieter Zimmermann, the collection emerged during a period of heightened academic interest in the complex, often fraught relationship between Franz Kafka’s modernist literary output and his engagement with his own Jewish heritage and the political climate of early 20th-century Prague.

The volume functions as a collaborative scholarly effort to move beyond the universalist interpretations of Kafka that dominated the mid-century, instead anchoring his work within the specific theological, cultural, and sociopolitical debates of his time. The editors sought to synthesize diverse perspectives on Kafka’s identity, examining how elements of Judaism and the Yiddish-speaking world permeated his surreal landscapes and allegorical narratives. Upon its release, the work was recognized for providing a dense, necessary framework for understanding the tensions inherent in Kafka's life and letters.
