Kariye (Chora)

Published in 1974 by the Turing and Automobile Club of Turkey under its publishing arm, İstanbul Kitaplığı, this volume serves as a comprehensive introduction to the Chora Church in Istanbul. The book was conceived during a period of heightened interest in preserving the city's Byzantine heritage, reflecting the cultural preservation efforts championed by Çelik Gülersoy, who sought to make the city's complex history accessible to both locals and travelers through well-researched, high-quality documentation.

The design and editorial direction were heavily influenced by Gülersoy's vision of urban stewardship. By focusing on the intricate mosaics and frescoes of the Kariye, the publication provided a scholarly yet inviting narrative that contextualized the building as a pinnacle of late Byzantine art. Upon its release, it was well-regarded as a definitive guide for visitors who wished to understand the aesthetic and religious significance of the site, establishing a standard for subsequent architectural guidebooks in Turkey.
