La forja de un rebelde

La forja de un rebelde, or The Forge of a Rebel, was written by Arturo Barea while he was in exile in England following the Spanish Civil War. Published in three volumes between 1941 and 1946, the work serves as a sprawling autobiographical trilogy that captures the social tensions of early twentieth-century Madrid and the devastating personal impact of the conflict. Barea sought to document the reality of the Spanish experience from the perspective of an ordinary citizen caught between ideological extremes, blending memory with historical reportage.

The English translation of the trilogy was championed by his wife, Ilsa Barea-Kulcsar, who played a critical role in shaping the manuscript for an international audience. The design and publication history of the Davis-Poynter editions reflect the mid-century effort to bring Spanish voices to the Anglophone literary market. Upon its release, the work was widely praised for its stark honesty and vivid characterization, eventually becoming regarded as one of the most essential accounts of Spanish life in the era preceding the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
