Lamia

John Keats composed Lamia in 1819, drawing upon an ancient Greek legend recounted in Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy. The narrative poem explores the tension between romantic illusion and harsh reality, following a serpent woman who transforms into a human to pursue love, only to have her facade dismantled by the cold logic of a philosopher. Published in the 1820 collection Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems, it stands as one of the final major works Keats saw through to publication before his untimely death.

The 1820 volume was designed to showcase Keats's maturation as a poet, moving away from the lush, sprawling style of his earlier work toward a more restrained and classical precision.
