Laurent Montaron

Published in 2006 by Presses du réel, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of the work of French artist Laurent Montaron. The volume was created to contextualize his early career, focusing on his interest in the limitations of perception, the nature of memory, and the mechanics of media such as photography and film. It captures a period where his practice was gaining significant recognition within European contemporary art circles for its melancholic and philosophical exploration of technological obsolescence.

The design of the book reflects the quiet, understated nature of Montaron’s own artistic output, prioritizing a clean, archival aesthetic that allows the visual documentation of his installations and photo-based works to take center stage. As a publication by Presses du réel—a house noted for its dedication to art theory and artist monographs—the book was received by critics and curators as an essential reference tool for understanding his trajectory from his formative years through the mid-2000s, grounding his conceptual investigations in a tangible, printed format.
