Le cardinal et l'orang-outang

Le cardinal et l'orang-outang was published in 1972 by Sedes as part of an academic examination of literary and theatrical history. Jacques Schérer, a prominent scholar of French literature and a respected authority on the works of playwrights like Racine, wrote the book to explore the intersection of religious structures and the shifting definitions of nature and humanity within the intellectual climate of the era. The work represents the rigorous, analytical tradition of mid-20th-century French humanities publishing.

The book stands as a testament to the influence of Schérer's scholarly rigor, as he was highly regarded for his systematic study of staging and classical texts. While the title is evocative and somewhat playful, the content remains firmly rooted in high-level literary criticism. Upon its release, it was received within academic circles as a nuanced contribution to the history of ideas, reflecting the transition in intellectual history toward more interdisciplinary approaches that linked institutional figures with the conceptual understanding of the primitive or the exotic.
