Le Diable amoureux

Le Diable amoureux, or The Devil in Love, was first published in 1772 as a landmark work of the fantastic genre. Written by Jacques Cazotte, the novella tells the story of Don Alvare, a young Spanish nobleman who inadvertently summons a devil that takes the form of a beautiful woman named Biondetta. The work emerged from the intellectual climate of 18th-century France, blending Enlightenment rationalism with an burgeoning fascination for the occult and the supernatural, effectively prefiguring the Gothic literary movement.

The narrative design of the book is noted for its psychological depth and ambiguity, moving away from traditional morality tales to explore the complex relationship between the protagonist and his demonic companion. Cazotte’s ability to weave a dreamlike, disorienting atmosphere earned the work lasting critical acclaim among later generations of writers, including the Surrealists, who viewed the text as a foundational exploration of the subconscious and the irrational.
