Where it came from
Leoncillo Leonardi was a central figure in 20th-century Italian sculpture, known for his expressive, often brutalist use of ceramic materials. This volume, published in 1960 by the Azienda beneventana tipografica editoriale, serves as a focused retrospective of his recent works at that time, documenting a period where his style shifted toward more raw, gestural forms that defied traditional decorative ceramic conventions.
The publication acts as both a catalog and a critical survey, highlighting Leoncillo's departure from figuration into more visceral, abstract explorations of clay. By capturing his transition during the late 1950s, the book provides essential documentation of his engagement with the contemporary art discourse in Italy, reflecting how his challenging, textured approach was beginning to be recognized by critics and institutions as a significant contribution to European modernism.
